I was standing on a wooden church pew beside my granddaddy singing to the top of my voice,

“Bacon and eggs; bacon and eggs; for there’s no other way to be happy in Jesus but with bacon and eggs.”  I loved bacon and eggs and I loved my Grampa.   I was 4 years old and in my Happy Place visiting my grandparents.  What a glorious morning! Why we’d just had bacon and eggs that very morning sitting in my grandparent’s kitchen. And now the whole congregation was singing joyfully about it.

The polished wood of the pews and podium gleamed golden in the morning sun. Jesus sat with his sweet lambs in the big oil painting that looked out at us.  All was well in the world. I was with my Grampa and could climb onto his lap anytime I wanted while the preacher was preaching and the choir was singing.  More than likely I fell asleep that Sunday morning nestled in Grampa’s arms.

Later that day at the Sunday dinner table I said, “I like that song about bacon and eggs.”  The adults looked at one another perplexed. No one seemed to know what I was talking about.

“You know, the one we sang this morning…..”  and I began singing it for my audience.  They listened for a minute and then began to laugh.

“It’s not ‘bacon and eggs’.  It’s ‘trust and obey’.”

Really?  What does that mean?  I had no idea what either of those words meant.  And, frankly, I was a little disappointed that there wasn’t a song about bacon and eggs.  From then on I sang the right words with my mouth but in my head I could hear “bacon and eggs”.  I liked bacon and eggs better. I still do.

There are a couple of songs on YouTube about bacon and eggs but really not my style. I’ll just enjoy them in the peace and quiet.

  3. I loved this story.

They said my dad sang “Fight in the corner…” in Sunday School instead of “Brighten the corner…”

As a little girl in England I used to sing “Yes, Jesus loves me – We are weak but tea is strong!” and imagined Him enjoying a nice hot cuppa!

  5. Misheard lyrics! A good example are the lyrics to Bad Moon Rising, the Credence Clearwater song. It sounds as if Fogerty is singing “there’s a bathroom on the right.”
